Social/Civic involvement down in down economy

A column in the Times this week focuses on the League of Women Voters, but the most disturbing comment to me is the following:

And as always, there’s the economy: “To join a social or civic or political organization now is a luxury,” says current president Linda D’Aquila.

While this is the reality right now for many; I feel the opposite in that it is a necessity because involvement increases local awareness encourages interaction and will ultimately improve the overall community as well as create opportunity for the participants.
